Tuesday, May 10, 2016 // Week in the Life Day Two

My Tuesday and Wednesday this week break from routine because I had an overnight trip to NYC with my Mom on schedule. I am happy to add it to my WITL album and get it documented. We have been coming to the city to see shows for a few years now and sometimes stay overnight to see more than one. We visit many of the same sights, restaurants and shops. So in some ways our NYC outings have become a routine of its own.

For Tuesday:

Me & Mom

We caught a 9:58 a.m. train into the city. It’s a little late to take the express, so it’s a bit of a longer journey. That gives Mom time to catch me up on things. She talks a lot and I listen a lot. I have a fairly large extended family with many cousins and second cousins, and since I’m not on Facebook the only way I keep up with what is going on is through her!

It’s a bit overcast and cloudy today, but luckily no rain. It’s still a little windy, yet with a light coat and scarf, I was comfortable.

We head downtown. I have some shops I want to stop at and I enjoy the downtown neighborhoods versus midtown more.

Flying Tiger

In Flatiron we check out Flying Tiger, a quirky Danish store, with a similar feel to Ikea. I picked up a few cute finds, I could’ve bought more if I could have carried more! Fishs Eddy is also a unique kitchen goods store. They have some hilarious political merchandise right now, plus a whimsical collection designed by Todd Oldham with inspiration from Charley Harper. I could own every piece.

It was getting quite nice by the time we reached Madison Square Park. We taxi’d downtown further so Mom could get a rest. Ate pizza at L’asso Pizza in Little Italy and watched a mural in progress. So cool.

I finally got a chance to visit CW Pencil Enterprise. Such a charming store. I selected a few pencils, some just for the looks of them, others from where they were from. A Tombow from Japan. One from India. A multi-colored spiral pencil because multi-colored spiral. I tended to select mostly black pencils, but made sure to grab a color or two.

It was getting time to head uptown and check in our hotel so we could grab a bite to eat before the show.

I love getting shots of the Empire from different spots of the city.

We checked in at the Hotel Edison then grabbed a quick dinner at West End bar & grill.

Tuck Everlasting is my favorite book. It was read to me in fourth grade, such a classic. Disney made a movie from it quite a few years ago, but changed it a little bit. I knew there would be some changes to bring it to the musical format.

The set was beautiful and because it wasn’t crowded we were able to move up a few rows. I always sit in Mezzanine, I like the view of seeing everything unfold.

The production was awesome, so much talent. I recognized one of the lead males from Newsies and another one from Wicked. It’s strange how that happens, but I usually recognize their singing voices first then go to my Playbill to see what else they have been in. The lead female, an 11 year old girl, did so well too. She hit some high, long notes! I liked seeing how they took the story and added just enough to it, but didn’t lose the essence of the message. Natalie Babbitt is sort of known for her whimsical descriptions and I think the screenplay did her justice.

I like to try to get a few still shots that drown out the buzzing of the theater district. I love the old theaters and architecture of the city. The brick and stone, the arches and design details.

Being in Time Square at night with all the bright lights (& all the people) is a sight to see. It’s not my favorite part of the city – I like the quiet downtown neighborhoods – but just to be part of it even a little bit is something.

I ended the night with a warm chocolate chip cookie in my hotel bed. I am mostly a “little things” person.

Some thoughts:

I didn’t want to stress out too much about trying to document for WITL while I was on this getaway with my Mom. I knew I would get plenty of photos anyways. I did make an effort to think about my perspective and gaze on certain photos. I thought of the things I love about visiting the city and tried to capture those moments.

Another thing I’ve been doing with WITL is thinking about the senses. I have not decided if I’m going to add this into each day of documenting the week or just randomly where it’s fitting. But I’ve made an effort to jot down notes on what I see, smell, hear, touch and taste.

I created this card, which some version of, will make it into the album.

Hoping to get Wednesday added soon.

  1. Loved the glimpse into your NY trip – haven’t come across those stores before but will definitely check them out next time I’m there. Well done with WITL!
