I have no idea what is up with me and documenting Valentine’s Day. I think it has something to do with the day falling in the winter and the idea that it has been on the weekends in recent years. I never was big on Valentine’s Day, but we do usually go out to eat or something.creative planner, scrapbook and cards, planner, sketch, layouts, scrapbook, scrapbooking

This year it was extremely cold here, like in the teens, so we spent the day inside by the fireplace. I got around to making an ombre layered cake that I’ve been wanting to try for some time now. Pink wouldn’t have been my first choice, but I figured it went well with the holiday. Anyways, I took a bunch of photos and decided to use the sketch suggestion from my Creative Planner from Scrapbook and Cards magazine. You can check out Paige Evan’s post on this layout here.

I like the use of triangles and then to make the shape of heart, sounded like fun. Totally out of my wheelhouse as far as layouts go, much more labor intensive and busy. But it’s fun to do something different once in a while!

Pic Stitch Layout

I started with selecting and editing my photos. Nowadays I generally edit everything in PicTapGo and A Color Story (mostly for the curves). I needed to use small photos since I’m scrapping 8.5×11, so I used Pic Stitch app to fit 6 square photos onto 4×6 layouts. Since I was going to be cutting them in half into triangles, I tried to move the photo subjects to one side of the square so I could get it in the triangle frame.

Since I had so many photos and not as much space, I wasn’t able to use any pattern paper for the triangles. Which I sorta like all the photos. It took me a few tries to position them so the photos were upright.

The cardstock is a light gray, specifically Soft Stone from Papertrey Ink. Because I have a lot going on with the photos there, I didn’t want to add too many patterns to this layout. I decided to do some stitching to give a little texture.

Sewing on Layout

For sewing on paper I use a separate machine from my regular sewing machine. Mine is the Janome Sew Mini, found here at Joann’s. I originally purchased mine on Black Friday two years ago and was able to get a pretty good deal, with free shipping, etc. This year my Mom wanted one for Christmas, so I found the best deal at Bed, Bath, & Beyond where I was able to use the 20% off coupon.

Initially, I used a silver thread and just did some freehand sewing around the edge. I wanted some loops which is a little hard to do on a small machine, but I managed. Then after adhereing the photos I used a zigzag stitch with white thread around the edge of the heart, just to define it a little more.

To secure the threads, I use a little Scotch tape on the back of the layout where the threads begin and end. I added some punched hearts from pattern paper. Some gold scallop ribbon (Target $1 spot).

Quick tip: when I am adding letters I start where I want the word to end to be sure I have enough room and the right spacing. I usually jot the word down on scrap paper so I am able to easily see it spelled backwards and don’t miss a letter! For this layout, since I was placing the letters on an angle I used a clear ruler to help guide the letters and keep it straight. This is an older sheet of Kelly Purkey letter stickers, but I love them because there are many consonants and even more vowels.

I ran some black stitches over the letters through the sewing machine. Because I am not a pink/red person, I felt having the metallic colors and a little black gave this layout a little more edge. A little more reflective of my style.

That’s a Making Memories (!) polka dot acrylic frame I’ve had forever that is popped up a bit with the B&W photo. This photo was actually taken the night before Valentine’s day, so close enough. Make it work! The xoxo was a freebie acrylic piece in an order from Amy Tangerine.

As you can see I am scraplift-impaired, but I can get inspiration and use it to suit my style of scrapbooking.

Do you do well using sketches or scraplifting? Who are some of your favorite designers you go to for inspiration?

  1. I love this layout and your step-by-step description of it. I have become a fan of sketches and frequently turn to the Simple Scrapper Member Library for inspiration. =)
